Post oOC OASIS - Released
By the Yods!
After months of hard work, the Eternal Outcasts team is proud to present you
with the 'Oasis' prototype, the next level Outcast experience based on the Crysis Wars engine.

Almost 10 years after the first Outcast, we bring you back to Adelpha.
You are sent to a place called "The Oasis", a small town in the middle of the desert of Talanzaar.
At first glance it may appear to be a beautiful and quiet place but you will soon discover that something is not right and the talan there need your help.

As the prophetic Cutter Slade, you won't be able to refuse the talan's pleas for aid... Would you...?

SPQ (Some Probable Questions :) ):

I want it, where is it?
It's right here

Can you tell me more about the release?
Read the release notes and keep reading this post :)
If your questions are not answered there, let us know.

How do I install it?
Just double click on the installer once you've downloaded it and follow the instructions.

But I don't have Crysis Wars...
No problemo :)
If you didn't buy Crysis Wars yet and only want it to play open Outcast Oasis you can also simply download the free Trial:
http://news.bigdownload.com/2008/10/06/ ... ars-trial/
Also remember to install the 1.5 patch afterward:
http://crymod.com/thread.php?threadid=47741
Trial and patch are over 6GB.

I am a mac/linux/windows98ME user, so I can't play the demo but I want to take a look at the gameplay nevertheless...
We've taken videos showing the gameplay

I have another question.
Please let us know.

Known Bugs and Problems
  • It is possible, that sometimes conversations just stop in the middle of a sentence and won't continue. This bug normally only happens, when the player presses the buttons in the middle of a sentence. So don't do that ;-)
  • If it happens anyway, just try to re-start the conversation. If this does not help, you will have to revert to your last savegame or restart the game. This bug is extremely rare, so don't mind too much ;-)
  • Moons in the skybox are not visible in medium settings and lower. If you use medium or lower settings in the game you won't see the skybox with the moons.
  • There is no lip-sync for the dialogues. We weren't able to do the animations. This will come in a further release.
  • There is no voice acting for Cutter. We are looking for the right voice actor (join us if it's you!).
  • There is no crosshair and no HUD (we didn't finish it in time). Aiming could be a little difficult but this mod is not that much about shooting after all.
  • The daoka(portal) is always on - it should get on after finishing the final quest but this wasn't implemented due to time reasons.
  • Recommended Settings for the Shader level are "High" ... even on lower settings!
  • Most animations are only placeholders (or taken over from Crysis) since our animator was too busy figuring out how to import fully customized characters than to do any real animation work. But at least we managed to get something in ;-)
  • There are numerous other minor bugs which we may or may not know about.

If you encounter more bugs, please post them on the OASIS boards @ openoutcast.org in the "Bugs-Thread".

Thanks for your help!

A note for people who have never played the original game
Outcast takes place on another planet in a parallel dimension. The talan - the natives - have their own culture and language. Even thought they can communicate with the player in English they use lots of native words in their speech, especially names of places, animals, plants, traditions etc. In the final game such foreign concepts will be introduced gradually and logged in an automated lexicon which can be accessed at any time. In this demo however going into such details wasn't justified and players new to the universe may feel overwhelmed by the plethora of alien words. Therefore we've prepared a small dictionary with the vocabs used in the demo. The characters will explain some of the concepts but you can always refer to the following list when something isn't clear.
Dictionary
  • Adelpha - the name of the game-world
  • Talan - intelligent humanoid beings inhabiting Adelpha
  • Ulukai - the "savior" according to the talan legends
  • essence - the soul of a Talan. There are four essences corresponding to the four natural elements and each talan belongs to one
  • Yods - the Gods of talan. Again, there are four Yods corresponding to the four natural elements.
  • shamaz - a healer, shaman
  • dolotai (guardian) - strong and noble Talan-worriors
  • gwart - time unit (about one hour)
  • lorka - time unit (about one minute)
  • dagurach - poisonous plant
  • rammu - a green plant with a red seed in it's center
  • Ne Seyat - solar eclipse (double solar eclips to be precise - the two moons cover both Suns on Adepha - a very rare event)
  • gamor - a dangerous carnivorous animal
  • sanegta - a big shark-like fish
  • to revert - to kill
  • made - a house
  • zort - crap
  • Okasankaar - a water region on Adelpha
  • daoka - a gate the allows anyone to travel instantly from one place to another. It bears certain similarities with a stargate :)
  • helidium - a special kind of crystal, growing on Adelpha
  • gamsaav - a special kind of crystal that is believed to preserve the essence of it's owner (in the original game it was used as a means to justify saving your progress and loading it later)

Good morning :)

I've waited the whole night for your demo. I finished it now and must say: Nice work! Continue to work on the game and make it a worthy successor of Outcast 1! Still a lot of work remains.

I follow this project since its was formed. The release of this demo brought me to register and to wish you good luck for finishing this game (I hope you will not change to an other engine again after the Gothic-, Crystalspace- and now Crysis-Engine ).

Now I have to sleep for 3 hours an than to rise again...

I've been following you for years.
I've been checking sites and message boards every week, sometimes every day.

I should have register before but i didn't.

Since "Oasis" is now available, I could'nt remain silent...

THANK YOU. ALL OF YOU.

I don't know what to say. The first second I launched "Oasis", magic worked. I am enthralled.
I'm ready to wait ten more years for "Oasis II".

THANK YOU. THANK YOU. THANK YOU.

Oh, and before I forget...there are alternative possibilities to solve the subquest "Get a sanegta fin" and "Run around the markers". Who did already find them?

And yes, there are Twon-Ha's somewhere...hehe :D

Post Re: oOC OASIS - Released
Hi everybody!
First I want to thank all the developers for the time they spend on this project and for the amazement they give me with this demo!

I'll give you my first impressions on oasis:
-I have to say that i retrieve the same great ambiance that was in outcast: i think it's because the music the sounds and the colours are very well chosen. This little city feels very "alive".
-the graphics: modelisation is very impressive cutter is perfect! the talans(clothes,faces...), the houses and objects are nice. textures are fine. the trees look better than in the trailer they look like the ones in okaar in the first oc.
-as i said before music and sounds fit very well. Another cool thing is that you have several choises in the discussions and the talan voices are great.
-I think you should keep cutter's animations like that( but it's my own opinion)

-I noticed some bugs with the camera when you're in houses. It would be cool if we could break objects by firing on them!

I didn't expect to be impress like that!!!! I retrieve exactly what i felt playing outcast but with better graphics. Keep on going guys! and THANK YOU!

ps: sorry if you don't understand everything my english isn't so good.

Ah yes - the 1st person camera is the default one available in Crysis and it's not good. This will be taken care of.

Regarding the oc feeling...I am part of the team so I am biased, I know ... but when I was playing through the demo I often tried to use the controls of the original OC ... I'd say the feeling is there ;)

Your work is awesome...
I can't find the right words to explain my feeling.
"perfect", "wonderful", "coherent", a mix of all of that.

In one word : "Bravo"

...maybe more after I'll recover my breath (...hum... I'm not sure if this typical french sentence could be translate like this.)

And Thanks to convert dream to reality...

Post Re: oOC OASIS - Released
I had to register after playing Oasis! My initial impressions briefly:

I LOVE IT!

I agree with vincent331 and Mala: you've managed to capture the atmosphere and feeling of Outcast. The music, Talans' voices, the environments and models (art direction style) are spot-on! I had to save before finishing the quest to spare some of the gameplay for later... :)

I've been following this mod for years, and I'm happy to see you're finally making steady progress! Now just add animations and voice to Cutter in the conversations, implement climbing on rooftops (jumping from roof to roof and climbing on top of buildings was my favourite way of moving around in Talanzaar) and you're set to producing more playable content! I hope the story will be as epic as the original. :)

Some notes on the Talans' vocabulary:

  • Sannegta should be written with two n-letters
  • "Gamsaav" should be written Gaamsavv

Other than those minor errors, I found no complaining in the speech style of the Talans or Cutter. Great job, and please keep on working hard on this mod!

Thanks the_grim. Glad you decided to register here :)

You're right about Sannegta.
As for gamsaav I think it depends on the language version you're using. In google Gmsaav returns 188 results and Gaamsavv 74. They even used different words in different words.
