A Sequel?

Although Outcast was no big commercial success, Appeal got the job to develop a sequel. This time, empowered by polygons, Appeal developed for several platforms to reach a wider range of potential customers. Inspired by “Metal Gear Solid 2″, Infogrames and Appeal decided to lay emphasis on the ‘action’ features of the game. Yves Grolet (one of the three founders of Appeal) wasn’t comfortable with this new arcade/action direction and left the studio. Problems arose. Lacking direction, the development of Outcast 2 (The Lost Paradise) slowed down. Infogrames wasn’t happy with the results and so the project was put on hold.
After a short period of working on other projects, Appeal ran out of money and went bancrupt. The studio was closed; it seemed that an official sequel to Outcast was unlikely. But Yves Grolet founded a new company, ElseWhere Entertainment, which was very interested in creating a sequel to Outcast. Unfortunately, Infogrames, the holder of the rights to the original game, resisted a petition from the Outcast community to commission a sequel. Hence, the community decided to start their own project to create a sequel to Outcast – its name was openOutcast.
ElseWhere Entertainment (also known as 10tacle Studios Belgium) began developing a new game based on gameplay concepts similar to Outcast. Rumours began to spread in the community of a game called ‘Totems’, carrying a glimpse of hope. It was told that a secret room exists, which is always closed, and in which a secret game was in development for a publisher which doesn’t want to be named. It was said that in this room there would be many artefacts connected to Outcast and Appeal.
