July 1999: Infogrames (now “Atari”) publishes “Outcast” in Europe and North America. Owing to high/unconventional system requirements, bugs on release, and no clear genre categorisation, Outcast failed to become the hit Infogrames had hoped for. Regardless of the fact that the game broke even with 400,000 units sold, Infogrames was disappointed. The marketing campaign in the USA failed miserably (only 90,000 units sold) – this was the market that Infogrames had been aiming to expand into.

Nevertheless, the innovative AI, epic story-telling, gameplay, imaginative culture and world,  and exploration qualities earned Outcast critical acclaim, awards, and an especially loyal and passionate fan base.
